VIBE
With a conservative, formal, but charming ambiance, this small hotel conveys that time-honored English feel. The Main House has the most traditional rooms, whereas the Carriage House and, even more so, the Mews lean slightly modern. After undergoing a £6 million renovation in 2011, expect rooms to feel a bit more crisp and sleek, but without sacrificing the classic British charm.
GO HERE WITH
Anyone who’s looking for an English country home type stay (especially in the Main House). A larger party could take over the Carriage House or Mews.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Good location (just off St. James/Piccadilly). It’s also set back away from the street so it’s quite quiet and private. We appreciate the excellent sense of place–you know you are in London here. When booking rooms, we would go for a more unique (Carriage House) or traditional/charming style (Main House). (If you want a truly contemporary feel, The Stafford is not for you.)
AMENITY WE LOVE
Private dining rooms in the 17th century wine cellar down below. This working cellar hosts wine tasting events (check website).
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
Room classes have a wide range of styles and locations–all are popular–but it is difficult to navigate what is best for you.
GOOD TO KNOW
Since our last research trip, The Stafford has become part of the Kempinski hotel group. While the hotel remains largely the same, some sections of the property are undergoing renovation, and certain details may have changed. We strongly encourage our readers to research any aspects of the hotel that are of particular importance to them before booking.
