VIBE

Not your typical paneled London tavern; the Commericial is done in a sort of faux classical style with eclectic furnishings, almost a shabby-chic version of Starck (but without the edginess). The relaxed, no-‘tude atmosphere is reflected in the seating choices: picnic tables, bar stools, and even armchairs.

WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

Jeans, sundress, shorts – anything casual and comfortable.

GO HERE WITH

Anyone. This is such a relaxed and chill tavern that even your mom and grandmother would fit right in.

CROWD

The Purple Passport’s scout went solo comfortably. The next table over had two bikers, the bar had a local off work from Smithfield Market, and other tables had hipsters (with one taking care of a Weimaraner).

WHY WE LIKE IT

With no attitude and a comfortably casual vibe, this is a perfect place to meet up with a few friends for a pint or two.

WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

More outdoor tables. When the weather is nice, they’re in high demand.

GOOD TO KNOW

Four hand pumps help give the bar an historic feel. Legend has it that there are tunnels running from Commercial Tavern to a nearby police station for unknown reasons, and beneath those tunnels are vaults that purportedly housed John Merrick (aka Elephant Man).
