Small British pub with a dark ceiling and dark, wood-paneled walls. Lots of military paraphernalia fill the walls to celebrate its history (this was originally built as an officers’ mess hall in 1763). The crowd here is touristy, but not aggressively so.

Smart casual; jeans are okay. A sign on the door warns: “No soiled clothes or overalls.”

WHY WE LIKE IT

This is a really cute space and fits the bill as a picture-perfect British pub. Set off main roads, but centrally located. Serves good brew.

WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

The crowd is decidedly tourist-if we could just find some locals in here, it would be the perfect British haunt. While we didn’t eat, we’ve heard mixed reviews on the food and service in the restaurant section.

GOOD TO KNOW

Three thoughts: 1) This place has a history, and a haunted one at that: there is said to be an officer who was flogged to death for cheating at cards, and his ghost and others have been spotted ever since. 2) Think before eating: the same food has a premium charge for restaurant (vs. bar), and we think the bar is just more fun. 3) On a hidden alley in Fitzrovia, this can be very difficult to find (seriously) so bring your detailed (super zoomed) map.
