VIBE

Done up in Japanese izakaya (tavern) style, the interiors at Chisou are notably spare. Black floors match black-clad staff, with plain wooden furniture and a small sushi bar as the only accessories. The understated décor is a neat counterpoint to the brilliance of the smiling service and the ultra-fresh Japanese fare. Though their prices have increased recently, loyal fans claim the unpretentious atmosphere and the divine menu of updated Japanese classics are worth it.

CROWD

A mix of sushi snobs, business types, and dates.

WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

It’s upscale casual, but in a subtle way–black pants or jeans, a smart top, and flats will be fine.

WHY WE LIKE IT

The mega-friendly staff and the quality food are the plus points. Great for anything from a business meal to a date.

WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

The prices seem to be on a continual incline–could be curbed a bit. But by ordering from the set lunch menu at lunch (including sushi and sashimi plates, teriyaki, tempura, and other classics), you can enjoy Chisou for a bit less.

GOOD TO KNOW

Cabbies sometimes have a hard time finding it, so tell them it’s off Hanover Square. Once there, head for a table if you’re looking for a business or intimate ambiance, but otherwise the small sushi bar offers the best views in the house. If you don’t have a time for meal (or didn’t score reservations), check out their next-door takeaway restaurant, Go Chisou. Note also that it's right near the swanky New Bond St. so makes a great casual lunch break during a day at the shops.
