In 1896, fish merchant Josef Sheekey was given permission by Lord Salisbury to open a shop on the site of present day J Sheekey (with the proviso that he continue to supply fresh fish for Salisbury’s own parties), and the rest is history. The quaint, clubby Victorian interiors are much as they were from the very beginning, and the expertly crafted fish dishes stick to tradition. But the fashionable crowd is fresh and hip–a nod to the fact that J Sheekey has aged well. It can get crowded (expect small tables and limited elbow room), but the setup (a series of small paneled rooms) keeps the crowds from getting overwhelming.
A lot of romantic dates, as well as the pre-theater crowd and business diners. Later in the evening, theater-going celebs often make an appearance.
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
It’s upscale casual–we’d wear a casual yet cute dress, flats, and sophisticated accessories. (If you’re heading out to the theater later, dress as you would for a show.)

WHY WE LIKE IT
It’s a neat London experience to eat in such a historic spot, and the fish really is excellent. Great place for a sophisticated meal with some "local color." Also, it’s very convenient for pre/post- theater dining.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
It’s a little pricey for what it is.
GOOD TO KNOW
Children are welcome in the restaurant, and kid-friendly amenities, like high chairs and children’s menus, are available. No longer owned by the Sheekey family, J Sheekey is controlled by Caprice Holdings, which also owns Le Caprice, Bam-Bou, Scott’s, Daphne’s, Rivington, and the Ivy.
J Sheekey Oyster Bar is next door with a 30-person oyster bar for a more casual ambiance.
