    VIBE

Osteria Basilico goes in whole hog for the trendy "rustic Italian" vibe, with terracotta-colored walls, simple peasant-style oak furnishings, cozy candlelight, and a fittingly hearty home-style menu. It’s a groove that definitely seems to be working for them–for almost two decades now they’ve been a Notting Hill fave, packed daily with lively (loud) crowds, thanks to their relaxed atmosphere and yummy, unpretentious eats. Some complain the staff have traded friendly hospitality a la Italia for snootiness, but that hasn’t seemed to dim locals’ enthusiasm.

    CROWD

Loyal Notting Hill locals (including a smattering of famous faces) make up the bulk of the crowd, though Osteria Basilico also pulls in the lunching business set on weekdays.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

It’s casual, but it’s also popular with the Notting Hill set, so don’t be shy about flashing designer labels. Try smart jeans, boots, and a great top.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

The back-to-basics Italian fare is great, and the convivial ambiance is fun.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

We had slightly snobby service and found the downstairs surroundings a bit loud for easy conversation.

    GOOD TO KNOW

They make a point of being kid friendly–they’ve even got a children’s menu–so bring the family. If you have a special request about where you’d like to sit (i.e., upstairs, away from the door, outside, etc.), you have to let them know when you make your reservation. If you can’t score a table, try their sister restaurants, Essenza and Mediterraneo (both are located on the same street as Osteria Basilico), or check out their takeaway pizza service.
