VIBE
Food historians flip-flop over whether this is the oldest chippie in town, but whatever its exact ranking in the fish and chips history charts, the expertly fried goodies at this always-packed eatery clearly have staying power. Chip shop connoisseurs drool over the generous portions of their hand-cut chunky fries, market-fresh fish, and perfectly seasoned, crispy batter. Owing to a 1970s revamp, the grimy decor is more grease-spattered coffee shop than historic landmark (definitely avoid the dank underground seating area), but the outdoor picnic tables are nice enough on a sunny day. A variety of fish types is available beyond the basic cod.
CROWD
A cheerful blend of tourists and in-the-know locals (workers from the nearby bus station are particularly fond of it).
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
Just about anything goes here–we’d wear jeans and a t-shirt we don’t mind getting greasy fingerprints on.

WHY WE LIKE IT
This is London’s ultimate grease fix, whether you’re looking for a calorific afternoon snack, late night bite, or hangover remedy.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
The dingy decor could use a refresher, the service needs to cheer up, the drinks menu can use some help, and some of the wackier non-fish-and-chips items on the menu need to go (especially the ones that look like they’ve been sitting in the display case since the 70s revamp).
GOOD TO KNOW
The portions are smaller for eat-ins–go for takeaway if it’s a sunny day.
