VIBE

Though unquestionably swish, The Square suavely steers clear of cliched haute cuisine snobbery, putting diners at ease with a charming, relaxed ambiance. Even the sparkling crystal and crisp linens in the dining room are softened with thick carpets and a warm crimson and gold color scheme. The French-accented service is attentive and friendly, and the food is simply lovely, both visually and gastronomically. Such subdued, polished elegance comes at a (steep) price, but for a special occasion or need-to-impress business lunch, it’s worth splashing the cash.

CROWD

Sharp-suited City boys mingle with ladies-who-lunch by day and romantic daters by night. American expats are a common sight here.

WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

It’s business casual and upwards–to keep up with the tailored Saville Row suit set, we’d wear a sophisticated day dress or skirt at lunch and a little black dress, pearls, and stylish heels at dinner.

WHY WE LIKE IT

First of all, the food: definitely not over-hyped, The Square’s cuisine is just as mouthwatering when it arrives at your table as it sounds on the menu. Second, the elegantly relaxed ambiance: fine dining without stiff service or any hint of pretentious priggishness.

WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

The steep prices.

GOOD TO KNOW

The GBP 30 set lunch is a great deal, but the main menu is better. So even with the best money-saving intentions, you may be tempted by more expensive offerings. Vegetarians at ease: veggie options are available all day, including a bespoke tasting menu. Also, there’s tons of great designer shopping nearby (at Burton Street, Berkeley Square, Regent Square, etc.), making The Square a nice spot for a sophisticated lunch with girlfriends before hitting the shops.
