VIBE
Started as an underground safe deposit vault for London’s elite, this 19th-century stronghold became a bustling silver market during World War II when dealers sought a safe spot for their wares. Still based here out of tradition rather than necessity, a plethora of vendors–selling items ranging from cutlery and swords to jewelry and opera glasses–markets their pieces to connoisseurs and enthusiastic amateurs.

Wedding or housewarming gifts, or quirky dinner party accessories. The Purple Passport research team even kitted out our own homes with cool knickknacks from the Silver Vaults.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The incredible variety, superlative quality, and unique quirkiness of the pieces. We left with our wallets light and our shopping bags (very) heavy. The one-of-a-kind setting is pretty cool too–we especially liked passing through the original vault doors on our way in.
GOOD TO KNOW
Although most of the silver is English, you can find treasures from every corner of the globe (not to mention almost any historical period). Check out John Surtee at Vault #65–his diminutive shop deals in unique animal pieces.
