    VIBE

Luxurious collection of French period pieces in the former owners’ lovely townhouse. The four Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Wallace have assembled gorgeous collections of 18th century paintings, furniture, porcelain, and gold boxes, as well as Renaissance and Medieval objects. Recent exhibitions featuring modern art (such as Damien Hirst’s paintings) indicate the Collection’s desire to stay fresh.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

Peaceful residential setting housing the Wallace collection. The brasserie and the café in the courtyard are lovely and provide a welcome respite after viewing the collection.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

While the formal tones of the permanent collection are quite exquisite, the recent temporary modern art exhibits make for an interesting touch. More of this would be welcome and help draw a younger crowd.

    GOOD TO KNOW

The fresh new collection of Damien Hirst’s (ended in late January 2010) proved that the Wallace Collection, while its roots are in 18th century art, is looking to keep bringing in art lovers of all ages and tastes.
