VIBE
This secluded compound next to the Summer Palace, once a guesthouse for the Empress Dowager’s personal visitors, incorporates many of the original 18th century features in its design (though amenities are all fully 21st century). Guests are free to wander through the tranquil series of interconnected courtyards or visit the Summer Palace via Aman’s private entrance. Unique features, such as a private theater, Chinese calligraphy lessons in the library, and exhaustively researched historical detailing, create a luxurious, bespoke Chinese experience. The service is astounding–there are only 51 rooms but over 350 excellently trained staff on hand at all times.

WHY WE LIKE IT
After navigating the wilds of Beijing’s urban jungle, this makes for a lovely retreat. Not only has Aman created a luxury experience for their guests with their gorgeous property, fantastic amenities, and service, but their unique location, attention to local historical and cultural details, and (best of all) peace and quiet make a stay here a one-of-a-kind Beijing experience.
AMENITY WE LOVE
Private access to Summer Palace is marvelous–this is what makes Aman special. Their spa (one of the best in city) is also not to be missed. Kaiseki at Naoki is a truly singular, yet expensive, meal.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
Remote location: being on the opposite side of the city from the airport and most attractions means there’s really no way to avoid Beijing’s headache-inducing traffic when on the move.
GOOD TO KNOW
It’s pretty far out from the city center–what with Beijing’s traffic, it takes at least 45 minutes to get to city center destinations like Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City from here. Perhaps not the best place to stay if you’re planning an intensive schedule of sightseeing. One option is to combine a stay here with a stay at a more central hotel. Rooms are truly special, including original features such as polished tile floors, Ming Dynasty furnishings, and hand-painted beams and modern amenities such as plasma screen TVs and sumptuous bathrooms.
