A hip gallery hidden behind a thicket of Sanlitun skyscrapers, 1949 is housed in a recently refurbished complex of nifty 1940s industrial buildings. The spacious gallery has a trendy, edgy vibe and a cool outdoor courtyard space for sculpture exhibitions. The surrounding buildings hold a handful of chic cafés, bars, and restaurants that are popular with Beijing’s smartest set.

WHY WE LIKE IT
The gallery is one of the few places in the city center where you can check out local contemporary art. We like starting with a wander around the exhibitions, followed by a sophisticated cocktail on one of the café roof terraces. The trendy crowds are perfect for people watching as you sip your drink.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
It’s a little tricky to find: it’s hidden behind the Pacific Century Place Mall (from Gongti Bei Road, walk down the driveway to the rear of the mall, and you’ll see the complex).
