VIBE
Arty English/Bloomsbury chic. Lots of people in the “industry” (media) go to Oscar for lunch or to enjoy a coffee or some tea while checking out the passersby. But the hotel itself is cozy with comfortable furnishings and complementary modern design elements that exude cool.
GO HERE WITH
Your British media crew. Else, just yourself or with a significant other. This is more of an intimate destination with a slightly feminine spin.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Even though Oscar is a bit of a scene, the hotel itself is quiet and low-key, almost hideaway-esque, and is known for its discretion. The Library is quite lovely for doing a bit of work. Rumor has it that Meg Ryan stays here on her London trips.
AMENITY WE LOVE
Screening rooms (found in all Firmdale hotels) are available for private screenings, a clear nod to the Hollywood clientele it services.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
When we were here, front desk service was just a bit rough around the edges, with our room not ready for guaranteed check-in. Given others’ reviews of the property, it appears this was a relatively isolated occurrence.
GOOD TO KNOW
If you are willing to spring for it, the split-level Loft Suites are quite a treat. It’s also a member of the Firmdale group of hotels (including The Soho Hotel, Haymarket Hotel, among others in London, and the Crosby Street Hotel in New York).
