VIBE
Originally started in the 1970s as a caf for newly arrived Pakistani immigrants looking for a quick halal bite after evening prayers, this East End institution is now such an epicurean celebrity on London’s ethnic dining scene that it draws in raving fans from across the city. The basic yet contemporary dining room (done up in cozy reds and yellows) is usually hazy with kebab smoke and curry steam and filled to bursting with rowdy patrons. Staff rush around, and waits to get in are measured in hours. But the prices are still rock bottom, the portions gargantuan, and the food just as delish as ever.
CROWD
Diverse–while it’s popular with local Pakistani and Bangladeshi expats, it also draws in trendy kids, foodies, and even a few adventurous City types.
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
Something machine washable. It’s very casual, and you’ll probably leave smelling of curry and kebabs, so go for a comfy, easy-to-clean look. (Portions are generous, so you may want to consider an elastic waistband too.)

WHY WE LIKE IT
Huge portions of delicious Pakistani eats on the cheap–what's not to love? Great for a hearty and rambunctious meal with a gang of friends.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
The looooong waits and wishy-washy reservations policy for the main room (despite having a booking, you may have to wait over an hour for your table or even find yourself chucked into the no-reservations queue). Also, the too-fast turnaround on tables isn’t great–they often clear food before you’ve even finished eating.
GOOD TO KNOW
Definitely bring your own booze–there’s no corkage charge. Also, if possible, book the VIP room (no extra charge or anything); we booked two days before our dinner and we glided past the hordes of people queued up and behind the velvet rope (yes, really, there’s a velvet rope). Inside it’s less smoky, less chaotic, and best of all, reservations are fully honored.
