Despite the New England beach theme, there is no backslide into cutesy kitsch at Shutters–this is a decidedly upscale destination. Although just a short hop from downtown Santa Monica, the beach location makes it feel like a get-away-from-it-all resort: expect a well-heeled, celeb-heavy crowd looking for some serious R&R. Rooms are special–many have beach views and great bathrooms (with actual shutters between room and bathroom). Quirky touches like in-room libraries and bath toys make this place stand out.

WHY WE LIKE IT
We were seduced by their sophisticated take on Cape Cod chic, and we were also charmed by quirky details like the in-room library and wine cellar.
AMENITY WE LOVE
Of course, the crowning glory is the fantastic beach location.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
The service can be chilly–we would prefer a friendlier “California cool.” And the hotel was quite crowded when we were there–busy lobby, busy (read: not relaxing) pool area, and just lots of movement.
GOOD TO KNOW
Shutters runs free yoga classes on the beach on Thursday mornings, and they also offer bike rentals for an additional fee. (The Venice-Santa Monica bike path runs along the beach in front of the hotel.) This is a convenient location for Santa Monica attractions like the Santa Monica Pier and shopping. Sister hotel Casa del Mar is just next door, and you are automatically granted signing privileges at both (Casa del Mar was a bit more quiet and relaxed at the time we were there and would actually be our pick). Shutters on the Beach is a member of Leading Hotels of the World.
