    VIBE

Sunset Marquis made a name for itself as a rock star party pad in the 1960s, a place where the most excessive of luxuries were available and the most outrageous excesses tolerated. Such hard partying certainly took its toll, but a 2008 revamp transformed these flagging facilities into a smart, sassy hotel that’s ready for business, literally. While graying rockers and music industry big wigs can still be found propping up the bar and chilling in the basement recording studio, a sharp-suited young business crowd has been piling in to take advantage of the spacious suites and fab business center. Note that this is not as high-end as many of the properties we often feature–rooms are smaller, bathroom finishings are quite basic, and it just feels less luxurious.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

It’s a legend on the Hollywood rock star scene–but we’re delighted they’ve cleaned up the messy stuff some of those legends are made of (the update makes for a comfy stay indeed). We also like how it’s set on a quiet five-acre estate–a great place to "get away from it all" without leaving the city (you are right next to the Strip!). The pools are fab and the terrace dining laidback and lovely. Guaranteed entry to Bar 1200 is a huge perk–it’s next to impossible to get in otherwise.

    AMENITY WE LOVE

Recording studio. (Even if you’re not planning on recording your next hit record here, you can still book the studio for a jam session or private event.)

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

Some balconies open onto a blind service alley…not impressive. Rooms are just not as luxurious, bathrooms are small and "older" feeling, and service is just a bit more spotty than many of the other options in LA. Hallways are dark and feel a bit dingy.

    GOOD TO KNOW

Their brand-new and very swish Mediterranean-style villas come highly recommended, especially if you’re planning to use the Sunset Marquis as a relaxing retreat from the noise and chaos of LA.
