In the celeb-infested waters of Los Angeles, landing a table at a hot restaurant can be a bit like swimming with sharks. Hollywood's hungry elite cause such a scene at the city's most fabulous and fashionable eateries that getting the right booth, in the right place, at the right time sometimes trumps what actually ends up on the plate (not that the size zero starlets about town are eating much anyway). Case in point: The Ivy, a legendary celeb magnet where the scene is zesty (ingénues-du-jour holding court on the patio while a pack of paparazzi stands ready to capture their every petite forkful) but the American comfort food menu is downright bland.
But don't despair–there's more to dining among celebs in their natural habitat than initially meets the eye. First off, at many of the trendiest spots, the food is actually surprisingly good. We'd gladly take a dip with sharks to catch some of that crispy rice with spicy tuna at Koi, where the zen décor does little to chill out the sizzling scene; the braised oxtail at Bar Marmont, where gourmet gastropub eats fuel the late-night marauders; or a plate of grilled robata-yaki at glam Japanese spot Katana, where the food and the crowd are equally smoking.
If you'd like to step out of the celebrity shark tank for a stretch, there're plenty of excellent places where the focus is squarely on the food, not the see-and-be-seening. On the über-refined end, we're partial to spots like Mélisse, a picture-perfect Cal-French gem with to-die-for tasting menus. Admittedly, we spied Warren Beatty and Annette Bening out for a romantic tête-à-tête here, a reminder to keep an eye out for shark fins anywhere you go in Tinseltown (even at non-celeb-centric spots, you're bound to cross paths with some star).
And let's face it, celebrity in Los Angeles is hardly confined to the dining room–it's also very much in the kitchen. Wolfgang Puck practically coined the notion of a celebrity chef, and the flagship of his dining empire, Spago, continues to attract a star-studded throng to its power terrace after nearly three decades. This is also the home of sushi sharks Nobu Matsuhisa (his first outpost of namesake Matsuhisa is still kicking) and Katsuya Uechi (who's teamed up with designer Philippe Starck at Katsuya).
If all this shark talk has put you in mind of seafood, you've come to the right city. LA's proximity to the Pacific means that ultra-fresh fruits of the sea abound. The haute seafood and understated elegance at Hollywood's Providence are not to be missed, but since fresh-from-sea cuisine is often best enjoyed by the water, you might want to hit up The Lobster in Santa Monica or Moonshadows in Malibu as well.
Among all these big fish, let's not forget the small fry. As in any good party town, casual eats are well done here, even at humble burger stands like In-N-Out Burger (just too good to be called fast food!). If you prefer a more "slow" food burger experience, take a seat at the counter at retro diners like The Apple Pan or the Beverly Hills Hotel's Fountain Coffee Room, where celebs have to wait just like the rest of us for a coveted vinyl stool. The pursuit of the grease fix is also alive and well at 24/7 Restaurant, The Standard, Hollywood's updated take on the classic diner, and at soul-food favorite Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles (just what it sounds like).
And we couldn't forget the coffee. Average joe here gets a makeover, Cali style: whirled into Ice Blended Mochas at homegrown chain the The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf or pulled through hot rod espresso machines at connoisseurs Intelligentsia Coffee and Lamill Coffee Boutique. Just be prepared to defend your place in line and your sought-after table: when sleep-deprived screenwriters and hung-over hipsters get a whiff of these phenomenal brews, it's not unlike a shark smelling blood from a mile away.
