California’s first drive-thru hamburger stand made a name for itself over 60 years ago with its innovative car-friendly set up, but the fantastic burgers and shakes turned out to have a staying power that outlasted the novelty of drive-thru technology. At the Sunset Boulevard location, the basic red-and-white interiors are much the same as they’ve been since 1948 (though recent years have thankfully brought expanded seating options). It’s a fast food joint that sticks to the basics and does them well–no one’s here for the scene or the ambiance. It’s all about the divine burgers, fries, and shakes.

They also have “secret” menus that don’t appear on the in-store listing but that can be ordered at any location. A little web sleuthing (even on In-N-Out’s own website) will turn up loads of options, but the basic “secret” choices are: burgers “protein style” (wrapped in lettuce with no bun), burgers “animal style” (a patty cooked in mustard and topped with sautéed onions, extra sauce and pickles), and fries “animal style.”
