In 1919, philanthropist and avant-garde enthusiast Aline Barnsdall invited her personal friend Frank Lloyd Wright to build her a house from which she could launch a cutting-edge theatre project. The result was Hollyhock House, a sunny courtyard-centric building that began Wright’s foray into Californian architecture and an early example of the style he later dubbed “California Romanza.” Subsequent renovations since Barnsdall donated the house to the city of Los Angeles in 1927 have destroyed some original details, but fans of Wright’s work find much to appreciate.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Despite some careless and disorganized restoration work, enough of the original shines through to keep it interesting, especially if you’re a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright’s oeuvre. We like the intricate hollyhock detailing, swinging Art Deco vibes, and the integrated garden spaces.

WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

There seem to be several never-completed renovation projects dotted around–would be nice if those were wrapped up.
