Since 1922, the fabulous acoustics in the 18,000-seat Hollywood Bowl have made concerts here a warm weather must-hear in LA. This is the summer home of the LA Philharmonic, and their firework-inflected performances are the highlight of the offerings; on nights when they don’t take to the stage, the varied program runs the gamut from children’s shows to rock concerts. Angelenos in the know spread out blankets and lounge with lavish picnics and bottles of wine as they take in the music.

On a warm summer evening, nothing beats a nice bottle of wine and a concert at the Hollywood Bowl–a relaxing, sophisticated night out.

Shows are NEVER rained out, and umbrellas are not allowed, so tough luck if it’s a soggy night.

GOOD TO KNOW

Parking is a nightmare here–definitely avoid driving if possible. (The Bowl offers a shuttle bus ($5/one way if pre-purchased or $8/one way if purchased at the lot) from various points in the city.) If you don’t have time to pack a picnic, Patina sells gourmet packed meals onsite and dining services are available in box seats. Check the website before bringing along a bottle of wine or other tipple of choice since rules on alcohol consumption vary by event. You can skip the onsite museum–it’s small and relatively uninspired. Finally, the Hollywood Bowl is only open seasonally, from June to September.
