    VIBE

Based at five convenient beach locations around LA (Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles, and Malibu), Learn to Surf offers lessons for first-time surfers ranging from private and group classes to intensive camps. Students only need to show up with a swimsuit, towel, and plenty of enthusiasm–everything else, from basics like boards and wetsuits, to superlative über-qualified instructors, is provided. A keen focus on safety means that even true novices can really go for it, knowing they’re in a safe pair of well-tanned hands.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

A great way to get the true California beach experience.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

There are no lockers at the beach sites, so leave those Gucci sunglasses at home (or in the car), or else you’ll have to dump them unattended on the sand while you surf.

    GOOD TO KNOW

They really take safety seriously. If surf conditions aren’t safe the day of your lesson, they will call as soon as possible to refund or reschedule. They will also help you pick an appropriate beach for your lesson–conditions vary at each, and they want to make sure the waves fit with your skill level. You will also need to be able to swim and be willing to sign a waiver before you can hit the board.
