    VIBE

The fact that The Greenwich Hotel is owned by Robert De Niro makes it easy to think it’s going to be just another gimmicky celeb venture. Thankfully, not so. Forget publicity stunts: authenticity is the byword at this elegantly eclectic property. From the handmade bricks to the silk Tibetan carpets straight from Himalayan workshops to the 250-year old Japanese farmhouse in the spa, the décor is truly original. Added to that is a sincere concern for creating a home away from home: not only are guests provided with ever-so-comfy public areas and rooms, but they’re also given a fridge full of snacks and a copy of their hometown newspaper every morning upon request.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

The character. The eclectic blend of intriguing artifacts from around the world (everything from the floorboards to the artwork has been sourced–and recycled–from some fascinating destination) is incredible–you’ll feel like you're staying in the shabby-chic residence of an eccentric collector. Beyond that, the considerate touches (free Wi-Fi, free minibar pre-stocked with tempting snacks, full-size bottles of toiletries, and even a carefully curated in-room library of must-read books) make you feel like you’re staying with (exceptionally cool) friends.

    AMENITY WE LOVE

The underground pool illuminated by lanterns.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

The price…but for that, we might move in permanently.

    GOOD TO KNOW

The “courtyard” rooms aren’t as fab as other rooms. DVD players, pre-loaded iPods, fax machines, and laptops are all available by request. Everything in the minibar (except, sadly, the booze) is free. Small pets allowed (one per room), but advise in advance. Locanda Verde is a very popular restaurant, so if you are planning on dining in the hotel, be sure to book ahead.
