VIBE
From the moment you walk through the door, The Marcel at the Gramercy is screaming for your attention: the showroom-esque lobby is punctuated with wow-factor furniture (gleaming patent leather banquettes, anyone?). Rooms are equally attention-seeking, with more of the same eye-catching design (and more of that brilliant quilted leather). Other onsite amenities like the sceney Polar lounge, always-packed ‘inoteca, and 10th floor guest-only lounge with views of the Empire State Building all seemed to be tuned to the same “look at us!” frequency. For all the attention The Marcel demands, however, they don’t necessarily reciprocate: service runs from hot to very, very cold.

WHY WE LIKE IT
Despite the center-of-attention antics of The Marcel at Gramercy, its quiet location is actually ideal for those who want to stay close to trendy spots like the East Village but don’t want to be in the thick of things. Though the rooms are pretty small, we were won over by the great public spaces, like the 10th floor lounge, Polar lounge, and inoteca wine bar.
AMENITY WE LOVE
The 10th floor lounge with balcony. There’s nothing like sipping your (complimentary) morning cup of coffee alfresco while gazing at the Empire State Building from a comfy lounger.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
The continental breakfast is pretty pathetic, especially considering you have to fork out for it. And who would love a lack of room service? Plus, the hallways were overwhelmingly perfume-y, and we've heard complaints of no hot water.
GOOD TO KNOW
The front desk is staffed 24 hours (multilingual services offered). Business services and meeting facilities available. Continental breakfast available daily for a fee. Pets under 25 pounds allowed for a USD 100 fee, plus USD 25/night. Extra beds and cribs available on request. Airport transfer and car services available.
