VIBE
When the high-society Astor family opened the St. Regis in 1904, it was meant to be an exclusive escape for America’s most prestigious and moneyed families, offering them a sumptuous home away from home where they would be surrounded by a like-minded elite. The Astor spirit still shines through in the gilded Beaux-Arts grandeur of the lobby, crystal chandeliers and gilding in the guest rooms, clink of silver cutlery in the Astor Room, and flawless Old World-style service (complete with tuxedoed butlers staffing each floor). That said, don’t expect the stuffiness or constricting social scene of yesteryear–rooms buzz with nifty tech gadgets; the newly opened Alain Ducasse restaurant is one of the hottest dining destinations in town; and the handsome bar has sassy notoriety as one of the first places to serve the Bloody Mary.

WHY WE LIKE IT
Where to start…the rooms are gorgeous (in an old school but not too fussy kind of way) and incredibly spacious. We also adore the service–what’s not to love about our own butler, a concierge who can arrange anything, and genuine attention and care from everyone from bellhops to doormen? The upscale onsite restaurants and lounge are destinations in themselves. Plus, what an address...
AMENITY WE LOVE
Afternoon tea in Astor Court. We love giving free rein to our inner society dame.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
The fitness center and spa are on the small side.
GOOD TO KNOW
If you’re really looking to live the high life as the Astor family intended, the Presidential Suite (complete with three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a dining room, and a kitchen) is a cool USD 21,000 a night. A 24-hour business center (including computer rental and secretarial services), event ticketing services, safe deposit boxes, limo services, valet parking, childcare, packing and unpacking services, and 15 function rooms are all available.
