VIBE
A true Sullivan Street gem, this small takeout store continues to serve Old World Italian sandwiches to purist fans and sandwich enthusiasts. Formerly known as Melampo, the shop still demands that sandwiches be ordered by name. Despite being one of the best and most famous deli spots in Manhattan, Alidoro’s tiny space has only two eat-in tables, and they still refuse to offer plates or glasses of water. All ingredients are imported directly from Italy, and we can really taste the difference.
CROWD
Local business types, regulars, and in-the-know out-of-towners.
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
Alidoro is very casual, so feel free to show up in a summery sleeveless top, shorts, and fun sandals.

WHY WE LIKE IT
There’s something endearing about their pride, including the list of 39 things you’ll never find at Alidoro (including, but not limited to, pickles, chips, plates, water, and a bathroom). Servers border on the gruff side, but if you just get with the program and order your sandwich by name, you won’t encounter any problems.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
We’d love to enjoy our delicious sandwiches here, so a few more tables would be appreciated.
GOOD TO KNOW
The general rules: customers can only order from the pre-set menu (no create-your-own), condiments are not offered, and they only accept cash (no credit cards). If the two tables are snagged, you can find seating around the corner on Spring Street and Sixth Avenue, where you’ll find a little triangular “park” (i.e., no greenery) with benches. Alidoro sandwiches are also sold at Puffy’s Tavern in Tribeca.
