VIBE
At Back Forty, simplicity goes a long way. Restaurateur, co-owner, and chef Peter Hoffman excels in using seasonal, organic ingredients to create dishes steeped in home comfort. Just as the Slow Food philosophy rules the kitchen, the decorations−like hanging rusting garden tools−seem like they’ve been carefully sourced over time (most likely, by the looks of things, in an old forest lodge). It’s the burgers that have put this spot on its neighborhood's culinary map, but even lesser-known favorites (like the rutabaga bacon soup), paired with any bottle of wine (all carefully labeled as organic, sustainable, local, or biodynamic), equally impress. The two dining rooms are big enough to fit plenty of locals and comfort food-seeking couples, but on warmer nights, the 40-seat outdoor garden beckons.
CROWD
A younger crowd of 20- to 30-something locals, foodies, families, casual couples, and the occasional first date.
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
Unless you're here on a date, casual is the way to go: we'd pair a long-sleeved tee with jeans and cool kicks.

WHY WE LIKE IT
The food is fresh and tasty, the ambiance pleasingly casual, and the service laidback but very attentive. Also, the special events can be super fun; we went for a crabfest, and it was a blast!
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
If you want bacon, cheese, or fries with your burger, you'll have to fork out extra for each. And the no reservations policy means lines can get long around dinnertime.
GOOD TO KNOW
Reservations are only taken for larger groups, who are usually seated at either of the restaurant's two communal tables. On Sunday and Monday nights, Back Forty serves two-course suppers at USD 25 per person. Be sure to check the website for other special events.
