VIBE

Like a scene out of a 1940s grandmother’s kitchen, this bright cupcakery and bakeshop is decked out in pastels and polka dots, all carefully color-coordinated with its displays of frosted treats (made on site every day). Cheery staff delight in recommending the best of what’s behind the counter: sure bets include the moist red velvet cupcakes and the airy icebox cake. Billy’s specializes in all-American treats and sweets (cakes, cookies, pies, and bars), but it also serves great organic coffees, hot teas, and all-natural milks and juices.

CROWD

Sweet-toothed locals of all ages, along with families with kids, tourists, and the occasional celeb. (Ethan Hawke has been spotted here!)

Unlike cupcake competitor Magnolia Bakery, Billy’s is friendly and welcoming, not bossy and strict.

WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

This place is teeny tiny, and lengthy lines build up at all hours of the day. (Though we were lucky to snag a seat at one of the wooden booths mid-afternoon on a weekday, space didn’t allow for more than four or five patrons.)

GOOD TO KNOW

New Yorkers love their cupcakes, and the crowds show it. If you’re planning to cater an event, Billy’s offers 10% off orders of 100 cupcakes or more. They also deliver, but at a charge (check the website or call for a quote); some items are not available for delivery (check their website for more info).
