For decades now crowds have been packing into J.G. Melon to enjoy Bloody Marys at the wooden bar or burgers at one of the rickety tables. The preppy patrons bumble along despite the semi-darkness (the low-low lighting is especially noticeable at lunch) and deafening noise levels (especially during peak hours), all for the no frills burgers: no fancy toppings, no cheese, no ketchup, no fries (those all come separately).

Just because the place is famous doesn’t give the waitstaff license to be so snooty or slow. But then again, perhaps that’s part of the charm of the place. And the no reservations policy is a bummer.

GOOD TO KNOW

Cash only. J.G. Melon is very popular at happy hour and at weekend lunchtimes–be prepared to fight for a seat if that’s when you’re coming. They’ve got a lot of burger alternatives on the menu, but we suggest sticking to classics like the hamburgers (be bold and order two if you’re really hungry) and the cottage fried potatoes. Also, you’re better off ordering bottled beers; the beers on tap come in small mugs.
