VIBE
This posh, Michelin-starred European bistro was the first New York venue opened by renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and remains his pride and joy. The narrow, eggplant-colored space has been recently redesigned to give it a lavish, ornately detailed look that brings to mind a sultry 17th century sitting room. Menu-wise, JoJo continues to draw gourmands and the neighborhood’s sophisticated artsy types (particularly pre- and post- museum and even theatergoers) with its award-winning French cuisine, divine desserts, and excellent prix fixe and occasion menus.
CROWD
A distinguished Manhattan set, particularly theater- and museum- goers.
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
Dress as the classy theatergoers do; perhaps a classic dress, elegant heels, and a stylish handbag.

WHY WE LIKE IT
Jean-Georges’s venues rarely disappoint, JoJo is no exception. The fare is simple, modern, and creative (the peekytoe crab was especially good). The décor is lush and romantic. The affordable year round prix fixe lunch menu is too good to pass up. And that chocolate cake? To die for, even after all these years.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
Not much.
GOOD TO KNOW
If you’re looking to splurge on Jean Georges’s famous cuisine, try the tasting menu. Though he is still an owner, don’t expect to see Jean-Georges manning the stoves: he is rarely in house. Most of the mains will fill you up, but definitely try to leave room for the Valrhona cake–it’s the house specialty.
OTHER LOCATIONS
None, but part of the Jean Georges empire, which includes Jean Georges, Nougatine at Jean Georges, and Café Martinique, among others.
