    VIBE

There may be a no-reservations policy and limited seating (we’re talking 10 tables), but don’t let the small size or simple set up fool you: this top-flight seafood shack is a legend in the Village. Mary’s sweet corner location is loaded with atmospheric touches like a tin ceiling and a stainless steel bar (which has a few extra seats), and the combo of cute décor details and a laidback, beachy vibe transports diners from the city to Cape Cod.

    CROWD

Couples on dates, seafood lovers, and West Village locals.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

In keeping with the seafood shack vibe, it’s casual. Try jeans, a t-shirt, flats, and aviator sunglasses.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

The simply delicious fish and shellfish. Plus, with takeout available, you can beat the crowds and feast at home.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

Maybe a few more tables, especially outdoors during the nicer weather.

    GOOD TO KNOW

Because it’s so cramped, Mary’s is not a place for groups. (Also note that they also will not seat you unless your party is complete.) The fish is delivered six days a week, and, to ensure freshness, Mary’s never orders more than the minimum, meaning supplies are always limited and dishes often sell out. A word of advice: ask the server about availability before you set your heart on anything.
