    VIBE

This bold, Asian-accented restaurant is another feather in chef/owner David Chang's Momofuku cap. The name “Ssäm” refers to tortilla- or lettuce-wrapped Korean food, but since opening in 2006, the cuisine has ventured far beyond these rolled-up realms. Foodies of all wallet sizes pack into the rich mahogany cafeteria-style tables for a taste of the pork-centric menu (which informs patrons, politely, that no vegetarian-friendly items are available).

    CROWD

David Chang loyals, the expected bunch of hip East Villagers, and foodies who managed to beat the crowds for a seat.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

This is place is super casual (staff are hip enough to wear cut-off jeans), so we’d go for a vintage t-shirt, designer jeans, funky heels, and our favorite accessories.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

Of all David Chang's restaurants, this is arguably his masterpiece. Also, Momofuku Milk Bar is just across the street, ready to satisfy any post-meal sweet tooth–it’s (in the words of its own pastry chef) “Dairy Queen with pork buns.” Delish!

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

It’s kind of a bummer that no vegetarian-friendly items are served. If you or a friend are seeking a veggie meal, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

    GOOD TO KNOW

Reservations are not accepted here, so arrive as early as you can–seats are given on a first- come, first-served basis. If you want to get either the duck ssäm or the bo ssäm, you must pre-order (you can do order via the website). Takeout is available for those not wanting to compete for a seat.
