The boldly decorated and extremely popular Serafina chain now has branches all over Manhattan and down the East Coast, but this one remains the heart of it all. Perhaps it is the diverse clientele (movie stars mixed with neighborhood families and preppy youngsters at the long wooden tables) that makes it so appealing. Or perhaps it is the homemade Italian and Tuscan favorites (crisp-crusted pizzas, meats fired on the open grill, seasoned pastas) that keep the warmly lit three-room restaurant packed to the rafters. Whatever the draw, Serafina has managed to retain its conviviality while consistently providing good service and hearty, authentic Italian food.

Anyone and everyone. On any given day you might find celebrities, hipsters, yuppies with their kids, older folks, couples on first dates, couples on second dates, groups of fun-loving friends, or even a suit or two.

There’s no pomp or pretention about the place-everyone feels comfortable here. It works for all occasions.

It can get very loud in here, and the tables are a bit cramped.

GOOD TO KNOW

There’s a great kids’ menu available. There are multiple Serafina locations around the city–check the website for addresses and menus (which vary by location). Takeout and delivery are available. Only sit near the pizza oven if you don’t mind the heat. Avoid sitting right by the door, or you’ll be bothered by passersby throughout the meal. Due to the no reservations policy (for groups under six), you may have to wait for a table during peak meal hours.
