When it comes to New York, it’s hard to sidestep the superlatives. The Empire City is the most populous metropolis in America, the most culturally influential capital on the planet, and the most linguistically diverse melting pot in the world, not to mention the biggest of all Apples. So, when you arrive on its storied streets, it makes sense that you’d be looking skyward for the tallest, the brightest, and the most universally recognizable sights like the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. Undoubtedly, New York’s iconic marvels are un-missable, but for every heavy-hitting cultural treasure, there’s also a hidden gem that’s equally representative of New York’s essence.
You'll probably want to start off by exploring the built environment surrounding you, as the Big Apple is ripe with outsized examples of the beauty and splendor human hands can create. Grand Central Terminal may be the busiest commuter hub in the nation, but tune out the crush of humanity long enough to study the elegant Beaux-Arts architecture and famed celestial ceiling mural in the main concourse. Historic St. Patrick's Cathedral, the largest neo-Gothic Catholic church in America, is arguably the most stylish (be sure to check out the altars–they're by Tiffany & Co.). But if you'd prefer a "drive-through cathedral" (that's how author James Wolcott described it), take a jaunt across the famed Brooklyn Bridge.
As manmade wonders go, New York's off-the-beaten-path spots are no less amazing. The Brooklyn Heights Promenade offers views of "biggies" like the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty but is out-of-the-way enough for a romantic stroll (the famous Annie Hall bench is here). And you can reach new heights (literally) at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine with a "Vertical Tour" of the 19th century church's stained glass windows, or on the rock climbing wall at Chelsea Piers, a high-tech sports center that also offers golf, ice skating, and bowling.
In a city where the built environment is so visually impressive, it stands to reason that its trove of artistic masterpieces would be housed in equally artful buildings. The Museum of Modern Art's striking Midtown tower is home to one of the world's finest collections of modern masters from Van Gogh to Warhol, while greats from Hopper to O'Keefe hang in the inverted stone and concrete pyramid that is the Whitney Museum of American Art. The Beaux-Arts premises of the The Metropolitan Museum of Art are fittingly massive for its collection of European paintings and two million artifacts spanning 5,000 years of history.
But smaller-scale museums here also boast worthwhile exhibits and, in many cases, offer up a slice of New York's diversity to boot. At the Tenement Museum, interactive tours bring to life the turn-of-the-century immigrants who once called the Lower East Side edifice home. The community center-cum-gallery El Museo del Barrio sheds light on the Latin American immigrant experience with easy-to-digest exhibits of Latino and Caribbean art. And Neue Galerie recalls early 20th century Germany and Austria with paintings like Klimt's scintillating Adele Bloch-Bauer I and its Viennese coffeehouse-inspired café.
While the visual arts in New York are nonpareil, when it comes to performing arts, the superlatives really fly. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts only hosts performers who are the best of the best in their field; the pitch-perfect acoustics at Carnegie Hall are only exploited by the finest, most practiced musicians; and Madison Square Garden declares itself the world's most famous arena for high-profile concerts (not to mention Knicks games). And that's just the starting line-up. The real veterans on the scene include Radio City Music Hall (home of the Rockettes' Christmas Spectacular) and Broadway's rambunctious musical theater marquees. (But if you want to pass on all that razzle dazzle, never fear: low-key venues like the cinephile-beloved Angelika Film Center thrive alongside the stalwarts).
You don't really need an admission ticket to view great drama in New York; its distinctive neighborhoods provide ample opportunity for witnessing a bit of street theater. The most famous 'hoods are rich in both history and personality. Speaking of richness, Fifth Avenue has the distinction of being the most expensive shopping district in the world, but its wealth is also measured in its cultural capital of iconic architecture and world-class museums. The art offerings and designer boutiques in chic SoHo are pretty swanky too (à la the Koolhaas-designed Prada outlet)–so swanky, in fact, that art galleries that once colonized SoHo have fled to the more forgiving rents of the edgier Chelsea Gallery District. While gentrification is also rife in Little Italy and Nolita and the West Village, these neighborhoods have managed to hang onto their defining characters (you can still get a whiff of authentic Italian eats among the chichi boutiques in Nolita, and boho coffeehouses in the West Village allude to its beatnik past). These days, the cute low-rise environment of the West Village is one of the most sought-after places for local New Yorkers to live.
But if the onslaught of all that culture has you craving a little (or a lot of) nature, New York easily obliges. Sprawling, verdant Central Park just happens to be the most visited urban park in the United States, and with its abundance of activities–from sunbathing to ice skating–it's easy to see why. The park's designer Frederick Law Olmstead was also the mastermind behind the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Prospect Park, equally impressive feats of urban landscaping.
But The High Line, the most recent addition to New York's open-space landscape, is a microcosm of everything that's exceptional about the city's sights. This once-abandoned section of elevated train tracks has been reclaimed as a lush urban retreat. It's a case of built environment meets nature (wildflowers grow from concrete), architecture meets art (avant-garde installations punctuate the mod glass and steel design), and hustle meets tranquility (you can stroll through peaceful greenery or drink in the trendy Meatpacking District below). It's superlative contrasts like these that make New York the host with the most.
