VIBE
Ever since it hosted the country’s first-ever Labor Day parade in 1882, Union Square has been a rallying point for political activists of all stripes–everyone from union leaders in the 1920s to anti-war protesters in the 1960s to Occupy Wall Street protesters in 2011 has made a stand here. On a more peaceful note, visitors these days often roam the winter holiday market for handmade gifts and treats or follow the trail of eco-warriors and exuberant chefs to the Greenmarket. The edible treats on offer in the market (most of which are organic or locally grown) range from heirloom produce to oven-fresh breads, locally made cheeses, and fresh cuts of meat.

WHY WE LIKE IT
The Greenmarket is the best spot in town to scoop farm-fresh fixings for a killer picnic.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
Frequent renovation work means the park often looks like a construction site.
GOOD TO KNOW
Besides fresh produce, the Greenmarket also offers ready-to-snack treats like warm apple cider and banana bread. If you’re interested in learning more about the area, check out the free 90-minute “Crossroads of New York” walking tour that starts from the park on Saturday afternoons at 2:00pm. (No reservations required.) Recent renovations have added a 15,000-square-foot children’s playground and Wi-Fi throughout the park. The annual holiday market runs from November to December. And for a bit of history: after 9/11, Union Square became a gathering point for mourners.
