    VIBE

A refreshing break from sushi and ramen, this East Village restaurant specializes in robata, a Japanese cooking style where fresh meats and fish are cooked over a charcoal grill. The front room is dominated by the “hearth”, a 26-seat countertop grill where small plates are carefully arranged in front of the guests. The talkative "samurai" chefs make a show of twirling wooden paddles and whipping up dishes from zucchini, sea scallops, and the like–prepare for a feast of the eyes as well as the taste buds.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

Stylish casual; go for a chic blouse or sweater, jeans, flats, and a favorite piece of jewelry.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

We love sitting at the countertop where we can see the ultra-fresh ingredients being prepared right in front of us. It makes for a fun meal, especially with all the ruckus created by the chefs and waitstaff (order shouting seems to be the done thing).

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

Waits can be long, especially if you've got your eyes set on the counter.

    GOOD TO KNOW

Robata is similar to Japanese hibachi (or teppanyaki), where your food's preparation is the show. A quieter, more conservative, bamboo-lined back room is available. Owner Bon Yagi also owns several other Japanese restaurants/bars in town, including Sakagura, Soba-ya, Curry-ya, and Sake Bar Decibel.
