VIBE
This celebrated café, pasticceria, brunchery, and upscale dining spot easily reflects the elegance and culinary roots of its famed Milanese mothership, which dates back to 1936. (And they’ve not-so-subtly alluded to those Milanese roots with a gigantic photograph of Milan’s La Scala theater.) With delicious Milanese-based food and yummy desserts, this café attracts well-off locals as well the nostalgic Italian expat.
CROWD
Well-heeled Downtowners (less trendy, more elegant), Italian expats, European tourists, local intelligentsia, and dessert lovers.
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
Refined casual; we’d go with a put-together look like a simple dress, knee-high boots, and a silk scarf.

WHY WE LIKE IT
It was lovely even before the renovations took place, and now it’s truly a winner. Plus, one taste of the delectable gelato will transport you right to Milan.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
The prices are on the steeper side. (You’re paying as much for the scene–and the chance to be seen–as you are for the food.)
GOOD TO KNOW
The original Sant Ambroeus was built in Milan in 1936, and three US locations have sprung up since. Reservations must be made by phone (only the Madison Avenue location can be booked online). Takeout is available–perfect for a quick pastry run.
