Given its nickname as the City of Light, it should come as no surprise that Paris is an urban playground that never goes dark–its bustling days give way to blazing nights. Partying after sundown is practically a Parisian birthright, what with the outlandish royal fêtes once thrown by monarchs at the city's palaces and the notorious insomniac indulgences of the writers, artists, and bohemians that have flocked to the banks of the Seine for centuries. Paris was the first European city to light its streets with gas lamps, illuminating the way for such fabulous nocturnal adventures.

Today, those lamps are electric instead of gas, but our favorite Parisian nightlife spots still channel the various facets of all that luminous history. They run the gamut from sophisticated hotel bars infused with the grandeur and glamour of royal palaces, to seductive spots for painfully beautiful crowds, to laidback yet still lively bohemian dens. The styles may vary, but the common current that runs through all of them is that certain je ne sais quoi that makes every one of these picks oh-so-Parisian.

If you’re looking for a fête fit for royals, head to one of the city’s stunning hotel bars. Lit by dramatic chandeliers, the Four Seasons Hotel George V Paris’s Le Bar imparts Old World charm, while classic cocktails lend an accessibly convivial atmosphere. And, even though writer Ernest Hemingway was a master of understatement, his namesake Le Bar Hemingway in The Ritz features some of the priciest cocktails on the Continent. There’s a cozy, intimate feel and plenty of literary lore (Joyce and Fitzgerald were also known to carouse here) to imbibe along with your libation. Le Meurice’s Bar 228 may have a strong whiff of British clubbiness with its dark wood, leather furniture, and range of whiskeys, but the Lavalley murals picturing fêtes at Château de Fontainebleau remind you this spot is French through and through. Nightly live jazz softens things up, and light sparkling off the vintage crystal decanters sets a scintillating mood.

Lighting also casts an alluring tone in our favorite crop of white-hot hotel bar spots. At Le Bar du Plaza Athénée, the “blue hours” (6:00pm-11:00pm) feature azure lights and down-tempo cool music, while things heat up for “red hours” (after 11:00pm) with ruby lights and electro-rock. The split-identity concept is a magnet for celebs from Madonna to Mary Kate and the model set during Fashion Week. At Pershing Hall Bar & Lounge, the pink-lip gypsy bar pulls in an audacious party crowd, while the magical “vertical garden” of exotic shrubs in the courtyard is an enchanting backdrop for a little night romance. And the spotlight at Hotel Costes is squarely on the DJ, Stèphane Pompougnac, a world-renowned lounge mix master–his sultry tunes are the ideal soundtrack for this Baroque boudoir brimming with glam trendsetters.

If you want to lighten up a bit from the impossibly posh and scorchingly sexy, pop into one of our artsy-hipster picks for a laidback attitude that's still super fun. Moroccan kitsch meets pop art at Andy Wahloo, where lighthearted décor touches like hanging lanterns and paint can bar stools jive with light North African bites and cool cocktails (try an icy mojito in the cute courtyard when the weather's fine). Though the Experimental Cocktail Club has a barely marked door reminiscent of a dimly lit speakeasy, there's not a hint of exclusivity here. The focus is on turning out scrumptious, inventive cocktails and serving them up to a hip "everyone knows your name" crowd while a festive DJ spins in the background. Don't get us wrong–just because these two lounges are less polished than their hotel bar counterparts doesn't mean they're not hotspots. No matter where you choose to go as you head into the incandescent Paris nightscape, the night is sure to be electric.
