    VIBE

What started as a tiny, back-alley mom-and-pop joint in 1977 has blossomed into one of Taipei’s most renowned restaurants. Although it’s gone progressively upscale over the years (this location is particularly trendy), the menu is still all about homestyle Taiwanese classics. The friendly staff welcome you like you’re an old friend, and the sun-drenched dining room is easy to settle into.

    CROWD

A cheerful mix of tourists, loyal locals, and foodies.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

Upscale casual–dressy jeans, a tailored top, and flats would do the trick.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

Perfect for an upbeat lunch break when we’re hitting the shops of ZhongXiao East Road. The food is great (don’t miss the mochi with peanut powder for dessert!), and it’s nice to try traditional Taiwanese fare in a setting that’s significantly more refined than a street market (not that we don’t love markets too). Plus, the service is friendly, and the food is really reasonably priced.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

Honestly not much, other than perhaps a larger bathroom.

    GOOD TO KNOW

There are several other locations around Taipei, including the original location on ShuangCheng Street and one on the 85th floor of Taipei 101, which offers great views of the city. (This outpost is our favorite, though, for its central location.) Not all locations serve Taiwanese food; some have expanded into Japanese food (including several pretty solid Japanese buffets, several curry venues, and a shabu shabu restaurant). Last orders are at 3:00pm (lunch) and 10:00pm (dinner). Credit cards accepted.
