    VIBE

This lavish Qing Dynasty villa and gardens were heavily damaged during the political tumult of the early 20th century but have been painstakingly restored to become the most complete existing example of a wealthy private estate dating back to the 19th century in Taipei. The mansion itself can only be visited with a tour, but the delicate carved detailing and period furnishings make the hassle worth it. Outside, highlights include koi ponds, rock gardens, and rare flower displays.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

The tour of the house is a good way to get a glimpse into the life of the Taipei upper crust back in the 19th century. We dig the spectacular gardens too, which are one of “Taiwan’s Four Great Gardens.”

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

We wish the lead time for a foreign-language tour was just a few days, rather than a week (which they request in order to find a volunteer).

    GOOD TO KNOW

If you want to get into the mansion, you need to join the guided tour (Chinese tours are free and run daily at 9:30am and 3:30pm); tours are also available in English and Japanese, but they must be booked approximately one week in advance. Capacity is limited to 600 people, and they will close the doors if it’s full (fortunately, this is very rarely an issue). Opening hours are extended to 8:00pm during the Lantern Festival.
