VIBE
Back in the early 20th century, this was the place to be in Taipei; it was a popular theater district in the 1920s, and upscale department stores followed in the 1940s. It went out of fashion for a time, but with a new MRT station nearby, pedestrianized streets, and the revivial of the Red House Theater, Ximending has once again become an "it" destination, primarily for the city’s younger set. Crowds of fashionable teenagers and 20-somethings come to browse the indie fashion boutiques, bar/café hop, take in a show, or simply watch the street performers.

WHY WE LIKE IT
Fun, fashionable spot for a night out with the younger crowds. And we love detours down the smaller alleys, which are crowded with cool boutiques and indie dives.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
It’s really crowded on weekends and holidays.
GOOD TO KNOW
If you’re into history, there are exhibits in the Red House Theater about the development of the area. Ximending is also known for its vibrant gay community.
