With a wealth of sights coupled with an intense political atmosphere, DC can be an exhausting city whether you’re in town for business or for pleasure. For those who need a break from it all, tranquil Hotel Madera, which is tucked away on a quiet residential street just off Dupont Circle, offers an elegant, classic retreat. While public spaces are limited, its spacious, calming, Japanese-inspired rooms – with their grasscloth wallpaper; luxurious, lustrous beds; and deep, comfortable sofas – offer the perfect setting to relax and rejuvenate. If you’d like to break out from your room, there's chill yet stylish socializing at the complimentary wine reception in the lobby in the evenings (5:00pm-6:00pm) and at Firefly restaurant, and the affable staff is always happy to point you to nearby attractions as well.

WHY WE LIKE IT
Location! Hotel Madera is in a great spot near Dupont Circle (which offers buzzing restaurants and nightlife) and attractions like the Phillips Collection and the National Zoo. Also, as always at all Kimpton properties, we dig the free extras like the in-room yoga mat, the evening wine reception, and the organic Starbucks coffee served every morning in the lobby.
AMENITY WE LOVE
Romantic Firefly restaurant (although the complimentary wine reception is a close second).
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
While the rooms are surprisingly large, the bathrooms and lobby are teeny tiny. Also, they skimp on the extras (there’s no gym, concierge, or spa, and the business center amounts to one computer).
GOOD TO KNOW
For free Wi-Fi at all Kimpton hotels, join their free Kimpton In-Touch loyalty program (membership also includes USD 10 credit for the mini-bar each stay, along with many other perks). Occasionally, the hotel will issue out their “secret passwords”; upon check-in, if you mention the password, you’ll receive a surprise. Check Hotel Madera’s Facebook page for details. If you need more tranquility than the already quite serene rooms provide, book the “Tranquility” room, which offers extras like a Japanese massage chair and Bose white noise machine. And if the lack of fitness center gets you down, the “Cardio” room comes with a stationary bike, a treadmill, or an elliptical machine. Perhaps the most unique perk (and a testament to Hotel Madera’s loyal following): guests have the option of storing their toiletries until their next stay (handy if you want to unburden your carry-on luggage of all those liquids). Valet parking is USD 43/day, but true to Kimpton’s eco-friendly policies, hybrid cars are free. Pets are warmly welcomed with amenities like food and water bowls and dog treats. Kid-friendly perks include welcome treats, child-sized robes, and child-proofing kits.
