    VIBE

Inspired by the life of president, statesman, architect, academic, and ardent Francophile Thomas Jefferson, this elegant Beaux Arts boutique hotel exudes European sophistication and artful charm and character. A recent two-year renovation (it reopened in 2009) gave the staff the opportunity to really delve into the Jeffersonian theme. Rooms, which are meant to feel as welcoming as guest quarters in the home of a (wealthy) close friend, feature custom toile drapes with drawings of Monticello and other buildings he designed. Hallways are lined with framed original Jefferson-signed documents, the Book Room is stocked with leather bound volumes by Jefferson’s contemporaries, the spa and restaurant both focus on wine (a passion of Jefferson), and there’s even a dumbwaiter (Jeffersonian invention…) in the private dining room. Of course, for all that the unique quirks and Old World charm impress, it’s the intuitive, relaxed yet refined service that’s the real standout – from the moment you settle into one of the elegant chairs at check-in to the ultra-plugged-in concierge to the 24-hour butler available at the press of a button, you’ll get the kind of presidential service T.J. himself might have expected.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

We love the civilized and elegant touches like the checkered marble floors, the clubby Book Room, and afternoon tea in the glassed-in conservatory. And the service…really, they dote on you, and that’s a very, very good thing. Another plus point is that the amenities here (award-winning restaurant, vibrant cocktail lounge, spa, fitness center, etc.) are way beyond what most boutique properties in this city offer, including complimentary local and international calls. If you can, spring for a suite – they’re all unique, but we especially love the ones that are kitted out like Parisian salons. Throw in great tech amenities, Porthault linens, handcut Italian and Spanish stonework in the bathrooms, and custom bath amenities by red flower and…well, we really do feel at home (ahem, a very posh home).

    AMENITY WE LOVE

We’re sweet on the 24-hour butler service as well as the airy Greenhouse and elegant Plume restaurants, but we love the boutique spa most. Though on the petite side, the treatments are divine.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

Some of the standard rooms are rather petite (for a nominal upgrade fee, spring for a suite – it’s well worth it!). Also, this neighborhood is pretty quiet after office hours – you’ll have to take a taxi to get to dining- and nightlife-rich areas.

    GOOD TO KNOW

Make reservations well in advance if you’d like to dine at Plume. Nintendo, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, and DVD players are all available. Don’t fret if you forgot to pack something; The Jefferson has a stock of basics like black belts and dress shoes on hand in case you didn’t bring yours. Dogs are welcome (there are no size limits or fees), and water and food bowls are provided. There’s a pet-friendly room service menu. 24-hour business center, administrative staff (for an hourly charge), and elegant meeting/event space for up to 80 people are available. The Jefferson is a member of the Preferred Boutique luxury hotel collection.
