    VIBE

It may be housed in the former Hotel Washington, a historic Beaux Arts property which dates to 1917 and has hosted everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Harrison Ford, but this trendy Dianna Wong-designed hotel is as sexy as they come. Though ultra modern, the look cannily incorporates references to Washingtonian tradition through touches like the baroque-meets-pop art lobby lounge, a digital fireplace, and lamps hidden in busts of George Washington. Onsite drinking and dining options including the J&G Steakhouse (by celeb chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten) and rooftop cocktail bar POV have been immediate hits on the in-crowd scene and can be tough to get into, but hotel guests can skip right past the velvet ropes. The W’s signature 24-hour “Whatever/Whenever” service is relaxed but ever on-the-ball.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

It’s gorgeous. And it’s got a killer trendy scene – definitely a novelty in a town this buttoned up. In room, we dig mod touches like iPod docks, backlit headboards, and custom leather chaises as well as classics like views of the White House. The real winners for us, though, are the fab amenities, from the luxe Bliss spa to the hot POV rooftop lounge. While it’s a bit far from drinking and dining hotspots like Dupont Circle and Georgetown, the location still works well for anything from business to sightseeing.

    AMENITY WE LOVE

It's a tossup between the Bliss Spa and the sexy rooftop lounge POV (the drinks may be pricey, but they’re worth it for the views of the National Mall and White House and the scene).

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

Room design is very cool, but the rooms are on the small side, and some have dreadful airshaft views. (Don’t be fooled by the playful room category names like “Wonderful” and “Spectacular” – you’ll probably need to spring for at least a “Fabulous” if you really want space and a view of the outside world.) Another room issue is that the transparent bathroom doors don’t offer much privacy, so make sure you know your travel companion well. A pool would be nice…

    GOOD TO KNOW

A complimentary drop-off service (as part of their “Acura Experience” program) provides rides within five miles of the hotel (excluding Union Station and Reagan National Airport), Sunday-Monday from 11:00am-7:00pm and Tuesday-Saturday from 12:00pm-8:00pm. A 24-hour business center (with workstations, laptops, printers, and scanners) is available, as is 12,000 square feet of meeting/event space. Pets are welcome for a USD 25 daily fee plus a non-refundable USD 100 cleaning fee. Pet welcome amenities, toys, treats, and pet tags are provided.
