Not many restaurants could use the tagline “Where Capitol Hill Dines” without making us wince, but somehow for Bistro Bis, it works. We put it down to the lack of pretension–sure, the crowd of hardcore politicos and power brokers is impressive, but the pleasingly inviting cherry-paneled dining room and the affable staff keep the vibe comfortable. Plus, the dressed-up bistro fare by James Beard Award-winning chef Jeffrey Buben is consistently delish without showing off. Small wonder “Capitol Hill” dines here.

WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
A suit if you want to keep up with the Capitol Hill set, but otherwise a smart skirt and tailored blouse would be fine.

WHY WE LIKE IT
We like how it’s so relaxed and convivial despite the power scene that congregates here. The food is gorgeous, the service is excellent, and the bar is happening (in an upscale sort of way).
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
GOOD TO KNOW
Chef Buben also owns local favorites, Vidalia and Woodward Table. Free validated parking is available after 5:30pm at the lot across the street. Room service is available for guests at Hotel George. Only the bar menu (no full meals) is available from 3:00pm-5:30pm. Breakfast (think pastries, eggs benedict, corned beef hash, and more) is also a power scene when Congress is in session.
