In a neighborhood saturated with Starbucks coffees swizzled in flavored syrups, Filter is a welcome retreat. Tucked away in a brick row house on a quiet street, this coffee-obsessed shop serves only high-quality pour-over coffees, which−be warned−take five or so minutes to prepare. If we’ve got time to linger, we try to snag the prime real estate tables on the front patio, but if you’re in the mood to do some work, join the lucky few who have set up shop with their Macs inside.

WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
Though a constant flow of corporate suits come in and out, jeans and a tee are equally fine.
WHY WE LIKE IT
We like the attention to detail: latte art, careful baristas, locally roasted coffee (Ceremony Coffee from Annapolis, MD). And the pastries aren’t too shabby.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
We wish there were more chairs! Where else are we to savor our delectable cup of coffee?
GOOD TO KNOW
Filter is a bit low key in terms of exterior (brick row house), but look for the orange, coffee-themed bike racks and you’ll know you’re there. Free Wi-Fi is available, though laptop usage has been banned in the Foggy Bottom location.
