      U Street
Marvin in Washington, DC, named after the R&B singer Marvin Gaye, is a Southern-meets-Belgian restaurant with a Motown twist

    VIBE

Motown meets Belgium in this soulful spot, where jazz and Motown classics provide the soundtrack to a hybrid menu of American Southern and Belgian classics. Yep, Marvin Gaye is the inspiration (he spent significant time in Belgium), and the mash-up may sound random, but it totally works, especially in such dishes as Belgian short ribs and softshell waterzooi (a Belgian stew). The dimly lit dining room is perfect for a cozy date night or an intimate dinner with close friends. And though we don’t often think of “brunch” and “sultry” in the same sentence, we can’t resist chicken and waffles at Marvin on Sunday mornings.

    CROWD

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

This is a skinny jeans, funky top, high-heel clogs, and dangly feather earrings kind of place. Keep it trendy but casual.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

Key items on the menu (like chicken and waffles, Marvin burger, and grits) are always crowd favorites. The tight-knit staff are also friendly and helpful, but it’s really the Motown atmosphere that keeps us coming back.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

We’ve heard some items on the menu aren’t as spectacular as others.

    GOOD TO KNOW

The Motown/Belgian theme is based on Marvin Gaye’s restorative time spent in Ostend, Belgium, in the 1980s.
