    VIBE

Sharing one of the city’s oldest and most elegant buildings (think marble steps and white Greek columns), the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the grand National Portrait Gallery are an unbeatable duo of national treasures. The high-ceilinged halls include portraits of every American president, photos of influential Americans from activists to athletes, digital technology, and modern art design. If you experience visual overload, take a contemplative break in the graceful, glass-enclosed courtyard with paintings, trees, and a small pool.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

The breadth of the collection. It’s a really cool experience coming here and seeing all the different types of people who have shaped American history in some way, from the country’s first inhabitants to modern rock stars. And the American Art Museum showcases some of the coolest modern art designs in the world. Also, both museums are open later than the ones on The Mall, so we never feel rushed when we visit.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

    Not much.

    GOOD TO KNOW

While it’s only a short walk from the other Smithsonian museums, this spot isn’t on The Mall. Free, docent-led tours of the National Portrait Gallery are offered Monday-Friday at 11:45am, 1:00pm, 2:15pm, and 3:30pm, and Saturday-Sunday at 11:45am, 1:30pm, 3:15pm, and 4:30pm. Collection highlights tours of the American Art Museum are held daily at 12:30pm and 2:00pm (except on the second Tuesday of each month and on federal holidays). Group tours are also available. No photography in certain special exhibits, so be sure to read signs carefully.
