George and Martha Washington's historic residence at Mount Vernon in Virginia by Washington, DC

    VIBE

Strolling the grounds of this 500-acre estate is like taking a step back into the late 18th century. The former home of George Washington, this elegant manor operates like a functioning 18th-century estate with a classic white and red wood mansion, greenhouses, gardens, a stone kitchen, servants' quarters, and a blacksmith’s house. The charming museum is brimming with a collection of decorative period artifacts, and the grounds also include the tombs of George and Martha Washington and a memorial to the 18th century slaves who worked at Mount Vernon.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

The rolling green lawn, the spectacular views of the Potomac, the quaint gardens...we could go on and on. This little slice of greenery is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of DC.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

Getting here. While we love the estate’s remote, country feel, it can be a pain to drive or take the train/bus here if we’re coming from downtown DC.

    GOOD TO KNOW

Annual passes are available. Admission is free on Presidents' Day. George Washington inherited Mount Vernon from his older half-brother, Lawrence Washington, who served as his mentor. There is a cornerstone on the property that bears Lawrence’s initials “LW.” George fully came into ownership of Mount Vernon though in 1761 (until then, Lawrence’s wife and daughter were still owners).
