Completed in 1943, this neoclassical monument is set in a quiet corner near the National Mall. It was built in honor of inventor, diplomat, philosopher, and US President Thomas Jefferson, some of whose most famous words are inscribed in the marble rotunda. The contemplative spot allows visitors to ponder some of Jefferson’s ideals.

WHY WE LIKE IT
The slightly out-of-the-way location means the Jefferson Memorial tends to be a bit quieter than other DC monuments. Set on the water, and within view of the White House and the Washington Monument, the surroundings of this rotunda are as gorgeous as the building itself. Peak season is in the spring when cherry blossoms are in bloom.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
Nada. We wouldn’t mess with this historic hunk of marble.
GOOD TO KNOW
Rangers are on duty to answer questions from 9:30am-11:30pm and to provide interpretive programs every hour on the hour from 10:00am-11:00pm daily. It’s a 15-20 minute walk from the Smithsonian Metro station — but totally worth the effort. Parking is limited. The monument is equally striking by day (with the water and surrounding monument views) or by night (when it's beautifully lit).
