Washington Monument in Washington, DC is a 555-foot obelisk in the National Mall and is the tallest building in all of DC

    VIBE

The tallest structure in DC (by federal law, no building can be taller), the Washington Monument has become a DC icon and a symbol of national pride. Construction was started in 1848, but during the Civil War funds ran a little dry and the building wasn’t completed until 1884. This break in construction led to one of the monument’s signature characteristics – two varying shades of white marble. Now this 555-foot obelisk stands as a shrine to country’s first president and is one of the most impressive highlights of the National Mall. Take the elevator to the observation deck and take-in the city views.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

This is quintessential DC. No trip to the city is complete without walking down to The Mall to take in this inspiring and extraordinary scene. During the busy summer season, we like skipping the line to the top and coming with a picnic and some friends for a sunny-day lunch on the surrounding lawns instead.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

The USD 1.50 service charge for booking tickets online.

    GOOD TO KNOW

Although admission is free, you do need a ticket to enter the monument. You can pick up your tickets at the Washington Monument Lodge on 15th Street which opens at 8:30am; one person can get up to six tickets. Be sure to come early as a line often starts around 7:00am. You can also reserve tickets online, but online tickets are often booked months in advance. The last trip to the top of the monument begins 15 minutes before closing time. No backpacks or strollers are permitted inside the monument, and there is no storage facility.
